IS Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World Volume 1 WORTH YOUR TIME?

Yes!!!!!

WHAT DID I THINK WITHOUT SPOILING IT?

Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World Volume 1 is a fresh fun and endearing gag manga.

We LOVED IT.

Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World Volume One is a really fun gag manga that I found myself quickly addicted to. As soon as I finished the first volume I immediately had to purchase the next. Soon after I handed my iPad over to Jasmine to read and she was immediately hooked. The story is simple. Kominami is a person with severe social anxiety that has never really learned to open up and make friends. This is sadly so common in Japan in this comic that there is a name for it – Shlocken. See the image below to understand it more.

The plot follows the “Shlocken” as he ventures out into the world to find a job since his mother won’t support him  anymore. The gags come from this socially inept person dealing with day to day life and the various kooky people around him. I know the premise seems a little mean at first, but trust me this is a light hearted experience. You’ll be rooting for the hero in no time.

While there’s nothing really “heroic” about Shoutarou Kominami you can’t help but empathize with him. This isn’t some cliche character. He develops over time and eventually you really appreciate his efforts.

It’s also really, really funny.

Shut-In Shoutarou Kominami Takes on the World’s other characters are interesting. Some are nice and helpful and, unfortunately for Kominami, others are not. As you can guess Shoutarou Kominami is put in some really awkward situations that always make you giggle. The art is great and the writing never dips.

The first volume is pretty much a perfect introduction to the series that feels great on its own, but compels you to buy the rest. This is also a large volume. Coming in at 202 pages of wonderfully written and drawn story this is a no brainer especially since it only costs $2.99. Yen Press found another great manga to publish. We are hooked!
