INTERNATIONAL COSPLAYER INTERVIEW
It’s cosplay Wednesday time. For this, the month of our five year anniversary, I wanted to expand our cosplay coverage to amazing cosplayers around the world. Just like in our regular cosplay interviews, I looked for talented cosplayers whose works made me say wow and spend time admiring their pictures and talent. This month I have a wonderfully diverse group of cosplayers. I am proud of each and every one of these interviews and delighted to share their stories and work.
I am very happy to present our next international cosplayer interview – Alessia Cosplay from Brazil.
As I was stalking around Facebook looking for talented cosplayers I stumbled across her page and thought to myself “She loves cosplay. This isn’t for money, fame or anything else. She is just honestly passionate about cosplay and it shows.” Alessia is a self taught cosplayer that is improving more and more as time passes. Her cosplays are great, her pics are fun and her personality shines through. I knew this was someone I just had to highlight. I feel like if Alessia were a local cosplayer she would get along just fine with all of my cosplayer friends in the area. She is like the cosplayer friend next door that just so happens to live in Brazil.
I enjoyed this interview a lot. Alessia is a strong believer in positivity in cosplay. It doesn’t matter what your body type is, your skin color or skill just have fun and be respectful to one another and respect each others passion for the craft. Just have fun. I hope you all enjoy this interview as much as I did.
Enjoy my friends!
Can you please introduce yourself and tell us where you’re from?
Hello everyone! First, thank you so much for the interview ^^, My name is Alessia, I’m 23 years old and I live in Brazil. I have been cosplaying for years. I love to make my own clothes and accessories. I really enjoy videogames. That’s why most of my cosplays are from video games. My favorite is The legend of zelda from Nintendo. I love Nintendo.
What got you into cosplay and can you tell us a bit about what your first experience cosplaying was like?
Well, I never intended to get into cosplay. When I first started out I was just going along with my friend to check out the event. But once I started to cosplay I was amazed. It was sort of magical to become my beloved characters.
What do you like about cosplay?
I Love making my cosplays. Sewing my clothes and making my own accessories is just delightful! I also really love working with and being able to help my friends! My faviorte part is when photo shoots turn me into my favorite characters. So I guess I am saying love all aspects of cosplay.
What was the first convention you attended?
My first convention was Animazon, one of the biggest events in my city. Is a little small convention, but I like it.
How often do you make new cosplays?
So far, I made 27 cosplays, the list grows every year! Usually, I make five to six cosplays a year.
How many conventions do you try to attend every year?
On average, about four conventions a year. Not counting small cosplay meetings.
What do you like about going to conventions?
I like meeting and playing with my friends. I love dressing up in my cosplay and seeing the people’s reactions to my work. I also enjoy talking about our cosplays with friends and fellow cosplayers. Taking pictures, and, of course the parades are also so much fun! The key is to just have fun. When you cosplay, always remember to have fun ^^.
What are your thoughts on the cosplay community?
I think some members of the community have a lot of growing up to do. Unfortunately, there is still to much prejudice! Prejudice about being black, about being fat, tall and short. It´s really sad! Because cosplay is for everyone! Cosplay doesn’t depend on your body type or skin color, cosplay is love and hard work. Just make cosplay and be happy!
Are there any cosplayers you admire or are inspired by?
Do you have any fond memories of cosplaying that stands out?
Wow! I have too many fond memories about cosplay to pick from. Sorry, it´s too many events! I’ll just say a few memories, <3 ,In my first photoshoot, I fogot my rosalina crown, and I only realized it at the end of the shoot! ( Rosalina from Mario Galaxy , Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart), I remember my first cosplay group with my friends, it was so special for me. And last, I was in a photo shoot, was using Queen Hilda (from the Legend of Zelda, a Link Between Worlds), a little girl asked me for a picture to her, I did it, and right after, the girl asked me where as my castle, And if she could visit me one day (so cute *_* ).
You make your own cosplays, how did that start? Are there any cosplay builds that you are particularly proud of? How did you learn to do this?
I’ve been making my cosplays since I started cosplaying. I love seeing my clothing, equipment, and accessories coming together. It´s my hobby and sometimes my job. I´ve never taken any classes, I’m self-taught. While I love all of my cosplays, my special one is my Princess Zelda, from Twilight Princess, because It took me about ten months to make her. I needed to learn many things. For example, how to make resin stones. She is very detailed. While it was very challenging, in the end it was worth all of the hard work!
Cosplay is a hard and expensive hobby, how do you stay motivated when the going gets tough?
Sometimes it can be tough to make my cosplays. It´s very costly and sometimes, frustrating hobby. Thankfully my family, friends, boyfriend and fans give me the strength I need every day. This interview also really helps. Thank you so much!
Are you an avid Gamer? If so what games/genres do you enjoy? Anything you recommend that we try out?
Yes! I love games. I´ve been a gamer since I was five years old. My favorite game series are The Legend of Zelda, and Final Fantasy. I play a little of everything. I would recommend Bayonetta. I love this game so much. Bayonetta is one of my favorite game characters.
I love Berserk and Jojo Bizarres Adventures. As far as Berserk, read the manga, don’t watch the recent anime, it’s a disaster. Jojo is my favorite recent anime. I cosplayed Jolyne Kujo, my favorite Jojo
What do you do for fun when you aren’t cosplaying?
I´m playing vídeo games (games forever!), and I loooove reading classic books, watch TV shows (as Stranger Things and some others) and cartoons! I love Adventure Time, Star vs Forces of Evil, We Bare Bears and Steven Universe.
What cosplays are you hoping and or planning on doing this year?
My projects are under top secret development! They are characters that I wanted to do for a long time, from: Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII, Devil May Cry 3, Zelda, aaaaaaand….. My most awaited… Surprise! Like my page and wait for news!
What encouragement would you give someone who is shy and nervous but wants to get into cosplay?
A lot of people ask me about this question. Darlings, don´t worry! Nobody starts off good the beginning! Cosplay is for everyone, cosplay is fun, is love and dedication. Being the character you love is indescribable. If you are shy, make a cosplay group with your friends, it helps a lot! Do not be shy to ask for help your “senpais”. Don´t forget: The important thing is not just to have the perfect cosplay, It’s to have fun and be happy! No matter your color, your weight or size, just do it!
What advice would you give someone who just started cosplay?
As I said, don’t listen to negativity others may say. Just make your cosplays, focus on the positive and have fun!
Don’t forget to research your character. Try to avoid doing it just because of the outfit, do it because you like the character and want to have fun with it.
If you cannot make your clothes and accessories, remember to be extra careful with the cosmakers you choose and don’t mind what others say! If you do make them yourself, don’t wait until the last minute. Search for the materials early, study and don’t give up. It’s always hard and frustrating. In the end it’s always worth it. Oh, and don´t forget: have fun!
What draws to want to cosplay certain characters? What do you avoid cosplay wise?
I like so much strong female characters. Strong women who aren’t the typical “women who need to be saved”, as Bayonetta, Lightning, Cat (Gravity Rush), Chun Li and many others! Powerful and sexy characters in games get my attention! But I hate lollis!, No Lollis no! Sorry, but I really hate lollis!
How do you go about creating a costume when you have decided on what to do? Do you have a regular plan by now or do you wing it?
First, I choose the character, then research as much as I can about them. Such as personality, history, etc, so I can act like them when I am in costume. Then I look for a lot of refrence images. Since most of the cosplays I do are from games, I search for 3d models of the characters. Soon after, I make the molds of clothing or armor. I search for fabrics and materials. Then after all of the prework is done I start the hard part of putting it all together and making the outfit.
What is your dream money and time and help aren’t an issue solo cosplay and what is your dream group cosplay?
I have three dream cosplays: Midna from Twilight Princess, Samus Aran’s armor, and the last, I will make in this year and is a secret <3 ! Be sure to follow me to find out when I reveal it!
What book/movie/show do you recommend everyone experience?
I recommend a series that I am watching now, A Series of Unfortunate Events. I will not give spoilers, but it’s very good! The books are great, and Netflix made the tv series very faithful to the books.
What conventions are you planning on attending this year?
Tell us something interesting about yourself.
I´m a teacher <3 ,and I love reading. I graduated with a degree in Linguistics.
Well, thank us so much for reading my interview, and thank you much for the opportunity!
