    The Nardio Visual Novel Review

IS Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! WORTH YOUR TIME?

    Yes!

    BEFORE WE START.

As per usual, I jumped into this visual novel after ignoring it in my massive backlog for a while. I know game developers and visual novel creators would rather that a reviewer just get to things, but I feel like visual novels are best appreciated as a fresh experience. All I knew about Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! going in was that it was going to be risque, outlandish, inappropriate and would have plenty of fan service. I honestly thought this would just be a shallow slightly racist visual novel geared towards masturbation fodder. I am so happy about being so very wrong.

WHAT DID WE THINK WITHOUT SPOILING IT?

Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! is a very entertaining visual novel that is a lot more than it advertises itself as. I found it to be smart, funny and unbelievably engaging. This might well be one of the best visual novels I’ve read so far.

That sounds stupid, fun and insane. I was totally curious. I mean it sounded so over the top that I had to try it.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

    Welcome to Best Korea!

Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! has you playing through the visual novel as a protagonist who seems to at first, have no idea about North Korea or all of the drama surrounding it. Soon enough you find yourself being escorted through North Korea in an unavoidable tour with two beautiful young women. Along the way, you will pass through several of North Korea’s tourist destinations and learn a bit of history along with a lot of misinformation.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

Now I’m not sure how accurate the history or facts are here since I didn’t care to look anything up. Yet, it did surprise me, to at least feel like I am learning something in what was supposed to be a silly visual novel that touts itself as supporting “one-handed gameplay”.

With that being said, Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! didn’t have much to get aroused at all by. Sure it had some obligatory bathing suit and underwear scenes, but those scenes flowed naturally in the story.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

    Murica!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way, way too often in visual novels these scenes are painfully forced. This visual novel is more about this protagonist learning about North Korea and calling out all the bad stuff he sees. Along the way, his guides are also throwing jabs back about America. Some are obviously misinformation that someone who was raised in North Korea would say, others were kinda spot on. I know it’s weird for me to say this about a visual novel that touts itself as masturbation fodder, but the writing here is really smart.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

There is no fourth wall in this visual novel.

The fourth wall gets broken pretty often and the protagonist isn’t the normal oblivious idiot as we normally have to endure. Instead, he calls out the love interests weird behaviors, crazy situations and just the world around him. He isn’t super shy or super perverted. This has to be the most relatable protagonist I have ever had. Along the way, he seems to lose a lot of his ignorance of North Korea and throws off a few good jokes at it. I had a great time experiencing “Best Korea” through the eyes of our protagonist. Best of all his name was Donald Trump.

    Yeppers!

During my first playthrough of the game I didn’t figure out how to enter in a character name and the visual novel just named my character Donald Trump. It was perfection.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

The story is actually really good. Not Game of Thrones good, but really interesting and fun. I found myself with a big ole grin on my face the entire time and laughed out loud more times than I can count. Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! is just damn fun and a great read overall. The first play through and ending was interesting. It made sense and the next few that I have encountered were also good. This is one of the rare cases where I actually went back and happily checked out all the routes and endings that I could because I was having such a good time, not just for the final review.

The art was really good and never felt uneven. The rare few moments it sorta dipped, the visual novel called it out in a hilarious way. The only downside with the art is the gallery is lacking. I wish it showed all of the art off. As is, we just get a few of the big scenes. With art this good, I want more.

The more I experienced this visual novel, the sillier I felt for enduring so many depressing ones. The sillier it felt knowing that I waited this long to try a fun visual novel like this. This makes me rethink all of those perverted looking visual novels on Steam. Are they as much fun? I don’t know, but from now on I am going to really try to tone down the depressing stuff and have more fun with my visual novels.

Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! made fun of its characters, itself, its creators, and even visual novel tropes in general. That is besides all the fun it has poking fun at the countries talked about in the visual novel. Don’t worry about this getting dark.

Now Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! has also recently announced an adult patch to the game that I assume will unlock nudity. Honestly, I see no point. I don’t even know where they would shoehorn it in. That said, I know there are a lot of fans of these sorts of games that love this. The fact that the developers of this went out of their way to feed the fan base what they want is a great sign.

I can’t wait to try the other visual novel from DEVGRU-P Panzermadels: Tank Dating Simulator.

It, sounds ridiculous, but so did Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! The developer has also announced another visual novel in the works. Attack Helicopter Dating Simulator.

    Yes.

    I am ready.

This is totally worth its full asking price of $9.99. There are hours of content along with great art, music and best of all storytelling. After playing through it all I am shocked that this only costs $9.99. TOTALLY WORTH IT!

I can go on and on, but really there is no point. Stay! Stay! Democratic People’s Republic of Korea! is a great visual novel that I honestly can’t help but recommend. Although I bought it on a curious lark, I can’t help but recommend this to my friends.

    I loved it.
