The Nardio Review – What’s Hot at Redbox
Is It Worth Your Time?
Yes. If you enjoyed the other Die Hard movies, you’ll enjoy A Good Day to Die Hard.
What Should I Watch it On?
The action sequences in A Good Day to Die Hard demand Blu-Ray viewing.
What Did You Think Without Spoiling It?
Although formulaic and definitely over-the-top, you can’t help but enjoy watching John McLane and his son make their way through Russia. Sure there are some plot holes here and there, but it’s a fun and explosive ride. A Good Day to Die Hard is much better than the fourth installment.
Why it Works
The dynamic between John McLane and his son Jack McLane is hilarious. I love the ribbing that John gives his son throughout the movie. The action, while not really believable, is still a lot of fun. Sure, you’ll need to suspend your disbelief a lot here, but hey, it’s a great Saturday night movie. What do you really expect? There are some pretty great car chase scenes in the movie, one that includes Willis taking his car and driving it over an elevated highway onto a passing semi. How could you not enjoy it. The entire movie, you KNOW that Willis and his son are going to make it through, despite the ridiculous amount of explosions and bullets they endure. You just watch to see how badly they get beat up in the process and to see how they defeat the bad guy. This is not an intellectual film. A Good Day to Die Hard is just a fun, action-packed movie that will have you laughing at the absurdity of the situation. I enjoyed this movie much more than Die Hard 4.
I really wanted more of the father-son dynamic here. Willis had some good lines that ribbed his son, but there just wasn’t enough of his son giving his father a hard time. I wanted the snarky dialogue to go both ways like in the Die Hard with Samuel L. Jackson. Instead, the entire movie kind of lacked the humor and fun of the previous installments. It made the movie kind of flat and I ended up really not liking the son that much.
A Good Day to Die Hard is not the best or worst installment in the Die Hard series. The plot is predictable, but the movie makes up for the mediocre plot with a lot of fun action.
