If the winter weather has got you down, it might be time to put down the whisky and turn to the rum. These three tropical drinks will make you forget that it’s below freezing outside. Don’t forget to garnish with a little umbrella to really get that tropical island feeling.
Lime in the Coconut
For anyone that listened to the Harry Nissen song and thought limes and coconuts wouldn’t mix, well were you ever wrong! Coconut and lime are an excellent combination and a super easy cocktail to whip up if you have some rum in your house. The coconut is kept in check by the tartness of the lime, making it all to easy to drink. Move over pina colada, this drink should take your place as standard tropical drink.
Ingredients
- 1 oz light rum
- 0.5 oz coconut rum
- 1 oz cream of coconut
- 1/2 slice of lime
Equipment
- Ice
- Blender
- Cocktail glass
- Lime wedge garnish
Directions
- Combine all the ingredients into the blender. Blend until it is completely smooth.
- Pour contents into a cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a lime wedge and enjoy.
The Hemingway
This classic drink takes quite a bit of ingredients and might not seem like it would be super tasty, but once you’ve had one, you won’t be able to stop. And before you ask, yes this was named after the famous writer Ernest Hemingway. Apparently, the man had a fondness for booze. Who’d have thought, right? Every time he would go down to Cuba, he would order this tropical drink.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz white rum
- 0.5 oz maraschino liqueur
- 0.75 oz simple syrup
- 0.5 oz grapefruit juice
- 0.5 oz lime juice
Equipment
- Jigger
- Ice
- Cocktail Shaker
- Strainer
- Rocks glass
- Lime wedge garnish
Directions
- Combine all ingredients into the cocktail shaker then top with ice.
- Shake the ingredients together vigorously for 10 seconds.
- Pour contents into a rocks glass then garnish with a lime wedge.
Watermelon Jalapeño Margarita
What’s better than a little tequila to warm you up during the winter? The refreshing taste of the watermelon complements the heat of the jalapeño nicely. Excellent with or without salt, this tropical drink will definitely be a crowd favorite throughout all seasons.
Ingredients
- 1.5 oz jalapeño infused tequila
- 0.5 oz lime juice
- 0.5 oz simple syrup
- 0.75 oz watermelon juice (fresh if possible)
Equipment
- Jigger
- Cocktail shaker
- Ice
- Rocks Glass
- Lime wedge garnish.
- Salt (optional)
Directions
- Put all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker then top with ice. If you plan on salting the rim of your glass, do so before you pour the contents into the rocks glass.
- Shake the mixer vigorously for 10 seconds then pour all of the contents into the rocks glass.
- Garnish with a lime wedge.
