What is The Monster Project?
The Monster Project is a collaboration between elementary school kids and professional artists. Elementary school kids draw pictures of monsters, which the artists then reimagine and give back to the child. It’s an amazing way to show kids the power of their imagination and that art is, in fact, a potential career option. In many schools, often the first thing to go during budget cuts is the arts, an unfortunate trend. As the group puts it:
With a decreasing emphasis on arts in schools, many children don’t have the opportunity for creative exploration they deserve. That’s a monstrous trend we would like to destroy. As artists ourselves, we understand how important that initial creative exposure is and how it can truly alter the shape of a child’s future.
Personally, I have always been involved in the arts in one way or another whether it’s through my participation in band and chorus or designing games. These opportunities have allowed me to harness my creativity and turn it into something I and others can enjoy. This project isn’t just great for the children, though. On their site, The Monster Project notes:
What a refreshing opportunity it is to be offered a glimpse into someone else’s head – especially the fantastically bizarre, unobstructed thoughts of a child. It’s an amazing opportunity.
The Monster Project only has 11 days left on their Kickstarter to raise $12,000. I’ve put in my support and I really think you should as well. Art inspires us all even when we don’t realize it.
